Spring Into Green
The Town of Los Gatos is proud to present Spring Into Green: an event celebrating sustainability in Los Gatos!  Join us  on Sunday, April 22nd 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. as we celebrate Earth Day, Arbor Day, and Keep Los Gatos Beautiful Month in one extravagant event at Town Plaza!  Environmental vendors and partners from the local community will be hosting interactive booths for all ages.  Enjoy live music, activities, and capture the moment with a photo booth souvenir!  This event will take place in conjunction with the Town's weekly Farmers' Market to promote eating and buying locally.  Join us in celebrating the Town's environmental consciousness and learn about sustainability.  For more information visit www.losgatosca.gov/SpringIntoGreen.

Conservation Ambassadors
Celebrate Keep Los Gatos Beautiful Month on Wednesday, April 18th from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the Conservation Ambassadors at the Los Gatos Library!  Come see wild animals up close, learn about their habitats and how you can help protect them.  Conservation Ambassadors is a non-profit organization that provides homes for displaced wild-life and community education for the continued preservation of animals.  For more information call (408) 354-6893, recommended for children 5+.

California Native Plants Society
Going Native Garden Tour
Sunday, April 8th 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

This Going Native Garden Tour showcases gardens featuring California native plants.  This community-based tour is free of charge to the public.  Each tour features up to 60 gardens, most of them private homes, which are open on tour day in a do-it-yourself, open house format.  The gardens on the tour demonstrate reduced water use, improved habitat, and the unique aesthetic appeal of gardens designed with California native plants.

Are you new to growing drought-tolerant native plants?  Do you want to include them in your garden for beauty, habitat, and sustainability, but don't know where to begin?  Join us at the Easy to Grow Native Plants class on Saturday, April 28th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the LGS Recreation Center!  Learn about the many easy-to-grow native trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals for your home garden. 

About the Speaker: Sherri Osaka is a licensed Landscape Architect, Bay-Friendly Qualified Designer, and started her company, Sustainable Landscape Designs, over 20 years.  Since then she has been lecturing and implementing ecological landscaping techniques, specializing in native plants, graywater and rainwater irrigation, and pervious paving.

Explorer Hike: Wildflowers I
Wednesday, April 18th 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

What better way to spend a Spring day than to see the explosion of wildflowers along the headwaters of Guadalupe Creek!  Join docents Dennis Smith, Lynn Jackson, Kate Gudmundson, and Mary Brunkhorst for a leisurely walk along the Woods Trail with a view of Mount Umunhum.  You'll find and identify the many species of early-spring bloomers including possible rare and endangered plants.  Bring cameras, nature guides, lunch, water, and your own curiosity... whatever it takes for you to enjoy this beautiful Preserve!  For more information visit www.openspace.org.

Portola and Castle Rock Foundation
Castle Rock Earth Day
Saturday, April 21st  8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The Castle Rock Trail Camp has been a beloved fixture of the Bay Area backcountry for decades.  This Earth Day, April 21st, 2018, join the Portola and Castle Rock Foundation in reinvigorating the trail camp so that everyone can enjoy a safe camping experience.  Tasks include:

  • Installing safer, ADA compliant campfire rings
  • Improving the firewood shelter
  • Cleanup the rain shelter
  • Refurbishing the bathrooms
  • Clearing brush

Family Art Day!
Join LGS Recreation for Family Art Day on Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU).  Kids, and those young at heart, will explore hands-on art stations, crafts, and live art demos all in celebration of ALL THINGS SPRING.  Experience the rich talent and diversity of local artists and instructors and explore NUMU.  Register today!  Cost is $15 per participating child, all supplies included.  Visit www.lgsrecreation.org or call 408-354-8700 for more information.  Registration will also be available the day of - space permitting.  Family Art Day is offered in sponsorship with NUMU and LGS Recreation.

Hiking for Fitness (Adults)
Join LGS Recreation for Hiking for Fitness - an adult outdoor fitness program.  All hikes are approximately a 30-minute drive from downtown Los Gatos; locations may include: Rancho San Antonio, Sanborn, and Castle Rock State Park.  Hikers must have the ability to hike 4-5 miles, lasting 2-3 hours, including both uphill and downhill.  This program meets every Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., for four sessions beginning in either April (4/5 - 4/26) or May (5/10 - 5/31) for $85.  For more information visit www.lgsrecreation.org or contact instructor Cindy Tucey at ctucey@gmail.com

Green Bean Kidz (2-6 yrs)
Join LGS Recreation for a nature education and exploration program for children and their parents or caregivers.  Meetings take place in local parks and open spaces to engage with nature in an emerging curriculum, including: circle time, hiking, story time, art and/or early science projects, music, and games.  Led by Preschool Teacher and Naturalist, Ellen Gibson, Green Bean Kidz learn early education concepts through hands on experience in nature.  Materials Fee: $10.  This program meets every Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., 4/12 - 5/17 (6 meetings) for $160.  For more information on the Green Bean Kidz Program visit www.lgsrecreation.org
