Alarm System Registration Required for Los Gatos Businesses and Residences

On September 16, 2025, the Los Gatos Town Council adopted an Alarm Ordinance requiring all commercial and residential alarm systems to be registered with the Town of Los Gatos. The annual registration process will enable the Town to better respond to alarm issues and address the needs of the business and residential communities.

Registration is Now Open: Alarm System Registration Required for Los Gatos Businesses and Residences Begins January 2026

Effective January 1, 2026, all businesses and residences with a self-monitored, monitored by third party, or unmonitored security alarm system are required to obtain an alarm permit. Specific alarm system regulations are outlined in the Town of Los Gatos Ordinance. The alarm permit fee allows partial cost recovery so the Los Gatos Police Department can continue to provide a full-service response to alarms. Your alarm registration provides vital information to the police department in the event of an alarm activation at your residence or business. 

What You Need to Know

· The cost for new permit application is $95; permit is virtual and are valid through the end of the calendar year (permits expire December 31st). Notifications will go out in December 2025.

· This is an annual cost for both new and renewed virtual permits. Existing commercial permits are valid through the end of the calendar year (renewed permits expire December 31st). The cost to renew an existing permit is $95.

· Virtual alarm permits are not transferable in name, ownership, or location. If you move and activate a new alarm system, you must apply for a new permit.

· Fines occur on two or more false alarms in a six-month period (January 1st– June 30th and July 1st—December 31st). The fine after the first false alarm is $175 per occurrence.

· If an alarm occurs and the police department responds and you do not have a valid permit, then you will be responsible to cover the permit cost plus a fine of $190. There is no pro-rating for this program.
