County of Santa Clara Offering Limited Free At-Home COVID-19 Antigen Tests with Signups

The County of Santa Clara is offering a limited number of free at-home COVID-19 antigen tests to those who live, work, or attend school in the county, with four distribution locations opening on an appointment basis starting this Saturday, January 22.

Those who live, work, or attend school in the county may sign up through www.sccfreetest.org to obtain four at-home tests.

Those able to secure an appointment may choose from one of the distribution locations for pick up at a chosen time, with the first slots available this Saturday.

Each individual will be assigned a unique QR code which must be displayed to receive the tests. Tests are not available on a drop-in basis without an appointment.

Sign-ups are done through the same www.sccfreetest.org portal used for County clinic testing, and scheduling began earlier today, with a limit of one appointment per person. Each person will receive four iHealth COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Tests. Pick-up sites are designed for drive-through operation; however, individuals can also arrive without a vehicle and get the tests so long as they have an appointment.

The County of Santa Clara opted to purchase and distribute the test kits due to the current scarcity of tests and continued enormous demand in the community. Additional kits are being distributed through the County’s outreach teams to disproportionately impacted communities, through nonprofit partner organizations, as well as to first responders and other essential workers.

More than 15,000 appointments will be scheduled between Saturday January 22 and Saturday January 29. County officials will assess whether this program can be expanded based on availability of tests and the need in the community.
Each appointment will be made for one of four locations:

•    Hellyer County Park, 985 Hellyer Ave., San José
•    Martial Cottle Park, 5283 Snell Ave., San José
•    Vasona County Park, 333 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos
•    Foothill College, 12345 El Monte Road, Los Altos Hills (offers evening hours)

The County recommends that the antigen tests be used for those who have symptoms of COVID-19 or to end isolation or quarantine periods early for those who have tested positive, or for those who have been exposed to a person with COVID-19 (when a more-sensitive PCR test is not available). If an antigen test result is positive, it should be recognized as valid and applicable isolation guidance should be followed – there is no need in that case for a follow-up PCR test at a healthcare or County facility.

The County also reminds patients of all healthcare systems that they have a right to COVID tests from their own provider if they have symptoms or have been exposed to an individual who has COVID-19.

Free Federal Home COVID Tests

Every home in the United States is eligible to order 4 free at-home COVID-19 tests.  There is a limit of one order per residential address. Each order includes 4 individual rapid antigen COVID-19 tests. Orders will ship free starting in late January.

Ready Set Go

Fire Season Is Year Round

Now is the time to actively prepare for fire season and reduce your wildfire risk!

Start creating defensible space
around your house by: trimming brush and removing weeds and low hanging tree limbs, organizing your Firewise community in creative non-gathering ways, or hardening your home.

For details, please visit the Santa Clara County Fire Department's website.

Below are additional steps you can take to be personally prepared for wildfire season:

  1. Don’t be a source of ignition! Cease any risky activities like using outdoor machinery, barbecuing, improperly towing chains etc., as one less spark, one less wildfire!
  2. Pack your GO Bag Now.
  3. Agree on an Evacuation Plan for your family including pets. Where will you meet and how will you get there?
  4. Be ready to leave immediately if an order is issued.
  5. Sign up for emergency alerts with AlertSCC and Nixle.

Visit the Town's Be Wildfire Ready webpage for more information on how to be prepared and what you can do to help protect your home.

Lifesaving Information For Emergencies (L.I.F.E.) File

Emergencies can happen when we least expect them to and many of the requests for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) happen within the home. The Town of Los Gatos is partnering with the Santa Clara County Fire Department to promote their new L.I.F.E. file program. The L.I.F.E. File is a simple tool individuals and families may use to assist emergency responders during a medical emergency.   First Responders rely heavily upon the patient, and/or the patient’s family members, to provide information used to help in the treatment and care of the patient. However, there are times when the patient is unable to provide this information and family members may not be present or available to assist First Responders during a medical emergency. The L.I.F.E. File information includes past pertinent medical history, allergies to medications, medications currently prescribed to the patient, advanced medical directives and any additional information. The L.I.F.E. File pouch is a vinyl magnetic pouch that is placed in an easily seen location on the front or side of the refrigerator.

You may pick up L.I.F.E. Files from Town Hall and local fire stations. If you, or anyone you know, would like additional information on the L.I.F.E. File program please contact Jackie Rose, Community Outreach Coordinator at JRose@losgatosca.gov
