Battling Beach Traffic

Another warm weekend is predicted, which will likely bring a wave of heavy beach traffic on Saturday and Sunday.
The Town continues to analyze traffic patterns since Memorial Day Weekend and this weekend the Town will place a new changeable message board sign on the east side of Town emphasizing that Highway 17 is the best way to get to the beach.  In addition, signal timing changes on Santa Cruz Avenue and Los Gatos Boulevard is intended to encourage cut-through traffic to stay on these larger streets and improve traffic flow.
To the extent possible, the Police Department will focus available resources on alleviating congestion by addressing the issue of drivers blocking key intersections in Town. Last weekend, the Police Department issued 26 citations for blocking intersections. This strategy obviously has no impact on the number of drivers who use incorrect information from navigation apps to travel through town; however, keeping key intersections clear does help to maintain a more efficient traffic flow.
Questions from residents continue to come up regarding the beach traffic.  Many of these questions have been answered on the Town’s Beach Traffic webpage which has a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) link.  The Town’s Beach Traffic webpage can be found at:
If you would like to share your input, ideas or concerns you can email the Town at: or call our reporting line at 408-354-6810.
Beach traffic through Town on the weekends tends to be heaviest on Saturday/Sunday between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  When possible, try to arrange activities that require driving outside of these times.  Warm summer weekends provide a great opportunity to walk or bike around Town and support our local businesses while avoiding the congestion.

heat risk

Summer Heat Again This Weekend

Summer is upon us and with it the hot weather season. While we enjoy all that our beautiful Town has to offer this weekend, please remember some of the following hot weather precautions:
Potential heat impacts include:

  • Moderate to very high risk for heat related illness to entire population.
  • Hot temperatures can lead to heat stress or exhaustion. This is especially true for elderly and at risk populations as well as those engaging in outdoor activities.
  • Heat in vehicles poses extreme dangers, never leave pets or people in a parked vehicle for any reason, for any length of time. Beat the heat, check the back seat and look before you lock.
  • Increased fire weather concerns are also likely as a result of hot and dry conditions.
How residents can help one another
  • Check in on neighbors, family, or friends who are at increased risk, especially those who live alone and, if needed, offer to help them get to a cool location.
  • Ensure they have access to plenty of water, ice in their freezer, and a fan if possible.
  • Encourage them not to move around too much, especially in the sun.
  • If you need additional resources, call 311, or 911 if it’s an emergency

If you have family members or neighbors who may need a place to cool down this weekend, our Library is a wonderful place to relax and read and beat the heat:
Here’s more helpful information about hot weather precautions from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department:

Town Launching School Bus Pilot in January 2019

With a great level of enthusiasm, the Town Council gave a green light to the school bus pilot service at the meeting on June 5. The Council also budgeted over $80,000 in Fiscal Year 2018-19 to support this pilot.
The Town will release a draft service plan that includes up to four routes with bus stop locations and schedule. The two routes that receive the highest numbers of sign ups would be selected for the pilot.  The pilot is very small with the hope that the buses will be full to maximize the congestion relief benefit. Only two routes will be available so seats on the buses are limited.  Sign-ups will be on a first-come first-served basis. Parents will be able to reserve a seat by putting down a deposit. Please watch for updates in July.
When will the pilot start?
January 5, 2019
How much?
$180 for a pass for January through June 2019 (one half of the school year)
$350 for an annual pass August 2019 through June 2020
When are sign ups?
The tentative schedule is August 1 – 20, 2018

MED-Project Program

The Police Department is participating in the County of Santa Clara MED-Project Program (Medication, Education, and Disposal), designed to encourage proper disposal of prescription medications. This is a free service fully funded by the MED-Project. Government facilities and private businesses (drug stores) within the County are receiving secured disposal bins for kiosk disposal of qualified medications. The bins are like US Postal Mailboxes and there will be one disposal bin located in the Police Operations Building lobby.

Lifesaving Information For Emergencies (L.I.F.E.) File

Emergencies can happen when we least expect them to and many of the requests for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) happen within the home. The Town of Los Gatos is partnering with the Santa Clara County Fire Department to promote their new L.I.F.E. file program. The L.I.F.E. File is a simple tool individuals and families may use to assist emergency responders during a medical emergency.   First Responders rely heavily upon the patient, and/or the patient’s family members, to provide information used to help in the treatment and care of the patient. However, there are times when the patient is unable to provide this information and family members may not be present or available to assist First Responders during a medical emergency. The L.I.F.E. File information includes past pertinent medical history, allergies to medications, medications currently prescribed to the patient, advanced medical directives and any additional information. The L.I.F.E. File pouch is a vinyl magnetic pouch that is placed in an easily seen location on the front or side of the refrigerator.

You may pick up L.I.F.E. Files from Town Hall and local fire stations. If you, or anyone you know, would like additional information on the L.I.F.E. File program please contact Jackie Rose, Community Outreach Coordinator at

Volunteers sought for Bike Valet at Local Events

The Los Gatos Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission is supporting free Bike Valet parking at local events, building on the success of the Red, White and Blue block party, where we parked over 100 bikes, so we are ready with plenty of space and racks. Volunteering to park bikes is a ton of fun! You can sign up with some friends and make a date of it and high school students can even receive community service hours. Cyclists arriving at the event are always happy to see you and fun to talk to. Typically volunteers are needed for 2-hour shifts with each shift led by an experienced commissioner. If you would like to help out, please contact Maria Ristow, to become a part of this amazing volunteer team. Help us take more cars off the road and make it easy for people to bike downtown.
